One day of last June, I learned a great lesson while chatting to an old man in seventies at a farm in a suburb of Chung-ryang-Ri. There is a newly dug well in that farm, which he dug himself; his motive was, "¡¦in other country, they dug the Isthmus of Panama, and warships as large as 40,000 to 50,000 tons pass through it. It will be shameful if I cannot dig only a well, etc." Disregarding majority oppositions of villagers, he started digging it by himself; he completed it with only 5 Wons to buy building stones, though the estimated labor cost was 150 Wons (The subscription cost of Sungsuh Chosun magazine was 1.50 Wons per year.) He carried pebbles and sandy quartz on an A-frame carrier to fill the bottom of the well with them.
Unique sight of Seoul includes many drug stores and lots of medicinal water springs along the walls surrounding Seoul. Passers-by at sunset search for the elixir of life at the drug store, and pale young people wonder around medicine water springs; I sympathize with them who wish wonderful efficacy of those but benefiting minute efficacy of those. Those who did not benefit wonderful efficacy from ginseng and young antler or medicine water, go to Chung-ryang-Ri, and drink the water from that well until your stomach gets full, find an old man whose eyes are piercing at you to listen to his motive to dig the well, his methods and tools he used, his age, his social status, and his typical daily life.
The efficacy of this well is strange; ones who are susceptible to summer heat would feel like heat dissipates away right away; ones with weak stomach can labor tirelessly, doubling former energy level without any meal; nervous breakdown, a disease of civilization, can be completely healed within 30 seconds; students who drink the water of this well would become honor students; delinquent students who drink this water would feel that his character is being converted at the spot. If all 300,000 citizens of Seoul drink this water, all drug stores and physicians would close their doors, and 20 million Koreans do, Korea will be revived. I recommend for all citizens of Seoul and all Korean people to drink this medicinal water.
(Message: Kyoshin Kim had suffered from chronic indigestion problem until be delivered papers to supplement his schooling expenses in Tokyo, Japan. He had to run fast to finish work within shortest time possible for himself as well as his customers who wait for morning papers. Of course, his stomach problem was gone as a side benefit, and when there was a marathon game to choose Japanese delegates to Berlin Olympic game, he went to Tokyo with Son Ki-jung, as a couch, who subsequently won the gold medal in Berlin Olympic game on August 10, 1936.
So, he can attest that appropriate amount of labor or exercise will make strong physical body and mental health. I have experienced similar result from rock-climbing and mountaineering.)
